St. Wenceslas vintage

On the initiative of King Václav I. or Přemysl Otakar II, the town of Kadaň was promoted to a free royal town before 1261. It flourished most under the rule of Charles the IV. who granted the vineyard right to the town. Thereby about 100 hectares of vineyards have been established. Wine-growing flourished in Kadaň until the 18th century. The vineyards later began to be excluded as ancient rights ceased to be respected and the import of foreign wines started. The interest in growing grapes decreased. Still in 1842, vines were planted on about 10 hectares of the area. Gradually, however, this was reduced to 2 hectares, yet even this ceased to exist after 1945.

In 1997, the town decided to continue the ancient tradition of winemaking in Kadaň (in the area of the Franciscan monastery). The town was incorporated by law into vineyard communes. A vineyard with the size of 0.5 hectare was planted in the area of the gardens. It was dedicated to the main vineyard benefactors St. Wenceslas, St. Ludmila and St. Urban. The "Zarážení Hory" custom, which means that nobody is permitted to enter the vineyard during the grape ripening period, has been re-established since 2000. The VINTAGE festival commenced by a service in the Franciscan monastery has also been renewed. The mass is followed by the "Hory" opening ceremony in the St. Wenceslas vineyard.

This ceremony is started by service in the Franciscan monastery. The mass is then followed by the "Hory" vintage ceremony in the St. Wenceslas vineyard. Visitors can see an exhibition focused on wine growing in the Kadaň area, the overall area of the gardens and the method of grape processing – grinding, removal of seeds, mashing and pressing, and can taste this year's half-fermented wine, fresh grape must and wine.
